Visit to the facilities of Amkor Technology Portugal SA
.
The PCI – Creative Science Park Aveiro Region visited the facilities of Amkor Technology Portugal S.A (ATEP), together with the University of Coimbra, with the aim of getting to know the company, its production process, the potential waste generated and possible treatments for the recovery of the precious metals involved in the entire production chain.
The visit took place as part of the Microelectronics Agenda (led by ATEP and made up of a consortium of 17 partners), which was conceived in an integrated logic and in close proximity to the European initiatives IPCEI on Microelectronics and EU Chips Act, seeking to unlock the potential of the microelectronics and semiconductor industry.
The ME Agenda is the first step in Portugal’s response to Europe’s need to overcome its systemic shortcomings in the sector, namely through structural investments that strengthen national production capacity in the semiconductor market, its distribution, recycling and the capacity to produce relevant information in this industry. The Agenda seeks to make Portugal a benchmark capable of supplying Europe and other countries on a global scale.
PCI is leading Work Package 15, called “E-waste recycling to foster a circular and sustainable economy”, focused on developing innovative solutions for the recovery of precious metals using bioleaching techniques and the development of environmentally conscious best practices for the development of electronic products.
