The book “The 1994 Michael Porter Report Revisited – Portugal: 1994, 2025 and 2030”, authored by André Paula Santos, Alcino Lavrador and Bruno Damásio, and published by a2AI Consultores – Analytics Artificial Intelligence, Lda., has been launched.
More than 30 years later, the book revisits the study developed by Michael Porter on Portugal’s competitiveness and seeks to assess the evolution of the Portuguese economy, analysing the competitiveness clusters currently recognised and identifying pathways and priorities to strengthen value creation and prosperity in Portugal by 2030.
With a foreword by Dr Eduardo Catroga, notes by Eng. Mira Amaral and Eng. Luís Todo Bom, and a message from former Prime Minister and President of the Republic Aníbal Cavaco Silva, the book reflects on what has changed since 1994, what remains to be achieved and the challenges Portugal faces in strengthening its competitiveness over the next decade.
AMPERE HUB: a strategic opportunity for microelectronics and semiconductors
Among the initiatives relevant to this forward-looking vision is the AMPERE HUB – Centre of Excellence in Microelectronics and Photonics for Future Chips, referenced in the book as a strategic project for strengthening Portugal’s position in microelectronics, photonics and semiconductors.
The AMPERE project proposes the creation of a centre of excellence in semiconductors, microelectronics and integrated photonics, located at PCI – Parque de Ciência e Inovação de Ílhavo, in the Central Region of Portugal. The project aims to establish a technology hub capable of accelerating industrial development, strengthening national technological capacity and bringing together companies, scientific knowledge and innovation infrastructures.
The initiative is aligned with the regional strategy of the CCDR Centro – Regional Coordination and Development Commission of the Central Region for the development of microelectronics and semiconductors, contributing to strengthening the Central Region’s specialisation in a sector considered strategic for European technological and industrial competitiveness.
The creation of the AMPERE HUB represents an opportunity to strengthen the Central Region’s innovation capacity, promote greater territorial balance in technological activity and create the conditions for the development of high-precision, high-value-added technologies.
At the same time, the project can complement other technology hubs and centres located in other regions of Portugal, contributing to a more integrated and competitive national ecosystem across the semiconductor, microelectronics and photonics value chains.
The reference to AMPERE in a book dedicated to Portugal’s competitiveness reinforces the strategic relevance of the initiative and the importance of keeping microelectronics and semiconductors high on the national agenda, mobilising partners, investment and funding instruments to enable the project to move forward.
In a European context marked by the need to strengthen the resilience and strategic autonomy of semiconductor value chains, initiatives such as AMPERE can help position Portugal in technology areas with significant potential for growth, innovation and industrial development.
