The European Union’s approval of the PRIMA retinal implant is another example of how microelectronics is enabling the development of cutting-edge medical technologies.
The device integrates a retinal microchip with smart glasses equipped with a camera, allowing visual information to be translated into electrical signals that partially restore vision in patients with geographic atrophy resulting from age-related macular degeneration.
This breakthrough illustrates the critical role of microelectronics, embedded systems and intelligent sensing technologies in the development of next-generation medical devices. It also reinforces the importance of continued investment in semiconductor innovation to support advances in healthcare and improve patients’ quality of life.
