Semiconductor sector in Portugal: challenges, talent and opportunity

Pedro Roseiro, Project Manager at Inova-Ria, a partner of the Microelectronics Agenda, discusses Portugal’s semiconductor sector in an interview conducted by Phil Alsop, Editor of Silicon Semiconductor Magazine. The conversation highlights the country’s key areas of expertise, namely analogue and mixed-signal design, photonics, telecommunications, and the automotive industry. It also explores the challenges and opportunities Portugal faces as it seeks to expand its semiconductor skills base through national programmes and ongoing international partnerships.

The Microelectronics Agenda reinforces Portugal’s commitment to innovation, technology, and sustainable practices, offering solutions with the potential to impact global markets. The initiative is also aligned with the Chips Joint Undertaking, part of the broader European Union strategy to strengthen the semiconductor industry in Europe, positioning Portugal as a relevant contributor to this goal.

The Microelectronics Agenda is an initiative launched under the country’s Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR), funded by the European Union – NextGenerationEU. Led by Amkor Technology Portugal and involving 17 entities, the consortium focuses on advanced packaging, high-speed access networks, integrated optical circuits, and factories of the future, with a strong emphasis on workforce training and development.
