Microelectronics Agenda Reverse Mission Strengthened International Connections and Showcased Portugal’s Capabilities in the Semiconductor Sector

The Microelectronics Agenda successfully concluded its Reverse Mission, organised by AIDA CCI, welcoming three experts from the United States — Jack Henkel (Florida High Tech Corridor), Raj Gautam Dutta (Silicon Assurance), and Brenda Prenitzer (NanoSpective) — to Portugal to gain first-hand insight into the country’s scientific, technological, and industrial capabilities in the microelectronics and semiconductor ecosystem.

Over the course of three days, the delegation travelled across different regions of Portugal, visiting organisations that form part of the national microelectronics, semiconductor, and advanced technologies ecosystem, including partners of the Microelectronics Agenda as well as other key players within the Portuguese technology landscape. The programme showcased scientific, technological, and industrial capabilities while promoting the Products, Processes, and Services (PPS) developed by the Microelectronics Agenda partners to potential international strategic collaborators.

The mission began in Aveiro with a visit to PCI – Creative Science Park Aveiro Region, providing an initial overview of the region’s dynamic innovation and technology development environment.

On the second day, the delegation visited Altice Labs, the Institute of Telecommunications (IT) – Aveiro Branch, and HFA, S.A., where they had the opportunity to learn about research and development projects, engineering expertise, and technological solutions that contribute to the competitiveness and innovation of Portugal’s industrial sector.

The final day included visits to Amkor Technology Portugal, in Vila do Conde, and the International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory (INL), in Braga. These organisations demonstrated outstanding capabilities in advanced packaging, nanotechnology, applied research, and the development of emerging technologies, highlighting Portugal’s growing relevance within the global semiconductor value chain.

Throughout the mission, participants engaged directly with researchers, engineers, managers, and institutional representatives, fostering knowledge exchange, identifying synergies, and exploring future collaboration opportunities between Portugal and the United States.

This initiative reinforced the international visibility of the Microelectronics Agenda and demonstrated Portugal’s scientific, technological, and industrial capabilities at a time when semiconductors play an increasingly strategic role in global competitiveness, innovation, and technological sovereignty.

The Microelectronics Agenda extends its gratitude to all partner organisations that welcomed the delegation and contributed to the success of this Reverse Mission, showcasing the dynamism and excellence of Portugal’s national ecosystem.

Developed under the Mobilising Agendas for Business Innovation of Portugal’s Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR), the Microelectronics Agenda promotes collaboration between companies, research centres, and organisations within the national science and technology system, contributing to strengthening Portugal’s position in the European and global semiconductor value chain.
