Innovation and sustainability mark June visits of the Microelectronics Agenda in Europe

The participation of AIDA CCI and PCI in June, representing the Microelectronics Agenda at international events such as SMTconnect, MiNaPAD 2024 and Leti Innovation Days 2024, brought to light the latest innovations and sustainable practices in the sector. These meetings, held in different locations in Europe, allowed for the exchange of knowledge, the establishment of partnerships and the exploration of new technologies that promise to revolutionize the industry.

SMTconnect

SMTconnect, held in Nuremberg, stood out for its presentation of innovations in the assembly, testing and inspection of electronic boards. Companies such as ATEcare, LPKF Group and Photonics Systems showed advanced solutions for micro-machining and plastic welding. Fraunhofer EMFT presented the Fraunhofer Mobile Learning Hub 2024, a portable remote welding teaching and training station equipped with cameras and augmented reality glasses.

Contacts with companies such as Fraunhofer IMWS, ASYS Group and SEICA revealed interest in collaborating on European projects, especially in the microelectronics ecosystem in Portugal. Sustainability was also in focus, with companies such as MTM Ruhrzinn and Balver Zinn Cobar discussing recycling and revalorization of valuable metals, and Froeb Verpackungen highlighting the replacement of plastic with cardboard in electronic packaging.

MiNaPAD 2024

At MiNaPAD 2024, the focus was on semiconductor innovations and the application of artificial intelligence. Steffen Krohnert presented the results of the European Pack4EU project, which assessed the technological capabilities of the semiconductor sector in Europe. AMKOR Portugal was highlighted as a reference company, alongside Fraunhofer Portugal.

Parallel technical sessions covered topics such as the detection of solder voids by X-ray by VALEO and the development of solder paste by INVENTEC. Companies such as iMAPS France, YOLE Group and NANOTEC International discussed innovative projects and solutions, reinforcing the importance of collaboration and continuous development in the microelectronics sector.

Leti Innovation Days 2024

The Leti Innovation Days 2024, in Grenoble, France, hosted discussions on sustainable technologies and 3D heterogeneous integration. In the “Electronics & Sustainability” panel, the importance of managing water resources and using gases with a low carbon footprint was highlighted. There were also debates on the sustainable design of power electronics systems and the decarbonization of the supply chain.

The “3D Heterogeneous Integration” panel explored high performance computing, quantum and radio frequency. Companies such as Cerebras, IBM and Lightmatter presented innovations centered on chiplets for advanced computing. The use of modular chiplets was highlighted for its ability to allow the choice of the most suitable technology for each sub-component, resulting in more powerful and efficient systems.

Networking and partnerships

The participation of AIDA CCI and other Microelectronics Agenda partners – in these events demonstrated the importance of innovation and sustainability in the microelectronics sector. The partnerships established and the technologies explored promise to drive the development of more efficient and sustainable solutions, strengthening the European microelectronics ecosystem.

The Microelectronics Agenda was created as part of the mobilizing agendas of the Portuguese Recovery and Resilience Plan with the aim of strengthening the production and innovation capacity of the national semiconductor and microelectronics industry. It involves a group of 17 partners and seeks to help position Portugal at the forefront of the semiconductor management, production, distribution and recycling market, capable of supplying Europe and other countries worldwide.

The 25 new products, processes and services resulting from the Agenda aim to transform the microelectronics sector and contribute to its resilience, competitiveness and ecological sustainability, and will enable the Portuguese ecosystem to monitor and anticipate the sector’s needs.

The “Microelectronics Agenda” project runs from January 1, 2022 to December 31, 2024 and is co-financed on a non-repayable basis for a total eligible amount of €67,493,749.13 by the Portuguese Recovery and Resilience Plan through Next Generation EU.
