Last Thursday, December 7, the Government of Portugal approved the National Strategy for Semiconductors. The strategy defines goals and strategic axes that promote the growth of the sector in Portugal, mobilizing and maximizing Portuguese participation in the European ‘Chips ACT’ programme, opening up new opportunities for institutional, industrial and research collaboration.
The strategy establishes crucial goals and guidelines to boost the growth of the sector in Portugal, ensuring a contribution to the joint resilience of the European Union and greater strategic autonomy, the involvement and promotion of industry in the strategic development process, as well as the enhancement of the national scientific and technological system, establishing strategic lines of action in innovative areas.
It also envisages strengthening specialized training and specific skills in the area of microelectronics and semiconductors, expanding the national ecosystem for chip design and advanced packaging, and increasing technology transfer in emerging areas.
The cabinet headed by Elvira Fortunato, Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education, says that with global demand for chips accelerating, expected to double by the end of the decade and the sector’s market share rising to one trillion dollars, semiconductors are at the center of geostrategic interests and the global technology race.
This is a very important step for the Microelectronics and Semiconductor Community in Portugal.
