The Micro.electronics Conference: Portugal as a Global Player in the Semiconductor Market took place yesterday.

The event, which took place at the Aveirense Theatre (Aveiro) between 2.30pm and 5pm, was promoted by the Microelectronics Agenda Consortium, one of the mobilizing agendas developed under the PRR.

The first edition of the Micro.electronics conference had around 180 participants and was a strategic debate on the national and European agenda for microelectronics and semiconductors, seeking to encourage Portugal’s positioning in this market at an international level. The ambitions and progress of the Consortium’s activity were presented, as well as its objectives in the European context.

Among the speakers were the President of the Recovery and Resilience Plan, Fernando Alfaiate, and Diogo Vaz, an advisor to the Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education, who specializes in semiconductors and microelectronics.

Various topics were discussed, including the ‘Microelectronics Agenda’ in the national context, as well as the ‘European future of semiconductors’. António Barny, Senior Manager of R&D at Amkor Technology Portugal; Rita Santos, Project Manager at Fi Group; Pedro Almeida, Director of PCI – Creative Science Park Aveiro Region, Arian Zwegers, Deputy Head of Unit “Microelectronics and Photonics Industry” at the European Commission; Xavier Gómez, Head of Digital Transformation at FI Group; Paulo Freitas, Deputy Director General of INL and the Vice-Rector of the University of Aveiro João Veloso took part in the debate.

The Microelectronics Agenda consortium is made up of 17 organizations and is led by ATEP – Amkor Technology Portugal. In line with the declaration “A European Initiative on Processors and Semiconductor Technologies” and the “European Chips Act”, the Microelectronics Agenda is an integrated approach that is very close to European initiatives aimed at responding to the weaknesses of the global semiconductor market and mobilizing the growth of the respective sector in Portugal, through actions focused on innovation, production, design, recycling and the R&D of technological solutions.
