Thematic Workshop “Quantum and Microelectronics” fosters debate on technological future in Coimbra

Inova-Ria – Association of Companies for an Innovation Network in Aveiro, in partnership with the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Coimbra (FCTUC), held on October 22, 2025, the Thematic Workshop “Quantum and Microelectronics”, an event dedicated to exploring the synergies between quantum technologies and the microelectronics sector.

The workshop took place at the Laginha Serafim Auditorium, in the Department of Civil Engineering of FCTUC (Polo II), and brought together experts from academic institutions, research centers, and technology companies to reflect on emerging trends, scientific challenges, and industrial opportunities resulting from the convergence of quantum computing and microelectronics.

Program Highlights

The opening session featured speeches by Edmundo Monteiro, Director of FCTUC, and Paulo Marques, Executive Manager of Inova-Ria, who emphasized the importance of cooperation between academia and industry in driving technological innovation in Portugal.

This was followed by the Keynote “Quantum Technologies”, presented by Sagar Silva Pratapsi (University of Coimbra), who introduced the fundamental concepts and emerging applications in the field of quantum physics.

Panel 1 – Quantum Computing: Challenges and Opportunities brought together Penousal Machado (DEI, UC), Bruno Januário (IBM), Dinis Paes (Critical Software), and Emmanuel Zambrini (Quantum Networking, IT Lisbon), moderated by Pedro Alberto (Department of Physics, UC).
The speakers discussed technical challenges, the impact of quantum computing on the industry, and perspectives for Portugal within this rapidly growing ecosystem.

After a short coffee break and networking session, Panel 2 – Advanced Materials for Microelectronics featured Henrique Gomes (IT Coimbra), Teresa Monteiro (i3N), Gustavo Anjos (IT Aveiro), and Pedro Rito (University of Aveiro), moderated by Pedro Alpuim (INL).
The discussion focused on innovation in materials and processes that support the evolution of microelectronics and the importance of a collaborative national research strategy.

The closing remarks were delivered by Paulo Marques, representing Inova-Ria, who highlighted the relevance of quantum technologies as a driver of digital and scientific transformation for the future of the Portuguese technology industry.
