SEMICON Europa 2025: First day marked by intense activity at the Microelectronics Agenda stand and discussions on the sustainability of the factories of the future.

The Microelectronics Agenda was present on the first day of SEMICON Europa 2025, held from 18 to 21 November in Munich, Germany. Celebrating its 50th anniversary, SEMICON remains one of the largest and most relevant trade fairs dedicated to semiconductors, microelectronics, photonics, and related technologies, taking place this year alongside Productronica.

The Agenda’s stand, represented by AIDA CCI, PCI – Parque de Ciência e Inovação, and INESC MN, welcomed throughout the day professionals and companies with strong interest in nanofabrication, advanced packaging, and PICs – Photonic Integrated Circuits, an area experiencing rapid growth in Europe, both in production capacity and in new applications.

The technical programme also brought strategic discussions about the future of the industry in Europe. At the CxO Summit, the latest technological trends and new players in the European ecosystem were highlighted, including the evolution of the European Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (ESMC) — the new European foundry resulting from the partnership between TSMC, Bosch, Infineon, and NXP — which is expected to produce 480,000 wafers per year starting in 2027. SEMI’s recommendations for the development of the EU Chips Act 2.0 were also presented.

During the morning, at the TechARENA, the session Sustainable Future Fabs (10:00 – 13:15) took place, entirely dedicated to the role of sustainability in the future of semiconductor manufacturing. Under the theme Engineering Efficiency: Greener Fabs for a Resilient Semiconductor Future, industry experts presented solutions and strategies to make fabs more efficient and environmentally responsible.

The session addressed three key areas for the European market:

  • Brownfield vs Greenfield: Solutions for Greener Fabs

  • Water Management Strategies: Clean Chips, Clean Water

  • GENESIS: Advancing Circularity in the Semiconductor Industry

These topics reinforce the importance of aligning industrial growth with sustainable practices, ensuring Europe’s economic and technological resilience.
