Portugal strengthens its commitment to semiconductors with two strategic projects supported by ANI

The National Innovation Agency (ANI) has strengthened Portugal’s position in the microelectronics and semiconductor sector by ensuring the implementation of two national strategic projects, led by the International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory (INL) and the Institute of Telecommunications (IT), with a total support of €6.4 million.

This funding secures the national co-financing of Portugal’s participation in European projects approved under the Chips Joint Undertaking (CHIPS JU) and the European Chips Act, which are key European Union initiatives aimed at strengthening technological autonomy and the resilience of semiconductor value chains.

The supported projects focus on critical technological areas, namely the development of pilot lines, advanced design platforms, integration and semiconductor packaging, thereby reinforcing national scientific, technological and industrial capacities in this strategic domain.

This initiative represents a structural step in the implementation of the National Semiconductor Strategy, contributing to the consolidation of Portugal as a relevant player in the European microelectronics ecosystem, while promoting stronger links between research, innovation and industry and enhancing national participation in European collaborative projects.

The reinforcement of these capabilities is particularly relevant for mobilising agendas and innovation ecosystems, such as the Microelectronics Agenda, which have been working to strengthen the national technological base and promote the internationalisation of solutions developed in Portugal.
