The race between Intel, Samsung and TSMC to launch the first 2nm chip has begun

Apple is already waiting for its new 2 nanometer SoC to be introduced in 2025 devices. Behind it is TSMC, which is competing with other major manufacturers such as Intel and Samsung.

This type of chip, in these microscopic dimensions, is crucial for the future of smartphones, data centers and artificial intelligence (AI). Smaller transistors mean lower energy consumption and greater speed. Currently, terms like “2 nanometers” are used to describe each new generation of chips, rather than the actual physical dimensions of the semiconductor.

A new report in this week’s Financial Times claims that TSMC recently presented its new 2nm chips to Apple and Nvidia. The transition to 2nm chips will bring a combination of performance and efficiency to Apple’s product upgrades. On the other hand, Samsung has launched more affordable versions of its 2-nanometer prototypes, albeit less sophisticated than its rival. Intel, the previous market leader, plans to produce its next generation of chips by the end of next year.

The search for efficiency and better performance in the chip transition demonstrates the importance of innovation in the area of microelectronics and semiconductors in several key sectors.
